Maison Trenel
The winery's motto is "Bene decisit id quod bene amat", or "we only do well what we know well".
With nearly 100 years of experience behind it, Trenel knows how to produce wines that highlight the terroir of Southern Burgundy. Founded in 1928 by Henri Claudius Trénel, the company was purchased in 2015 by Michel Chapoutier who significantly increased the prestige of the wines and began an important journey of research and exaltation of the best terroirs of the Côte Chalonnaise and Beaujolais. In recent years, southern Burgundy has been experiencing a real renaissance, both qualitatively and commercially. The growing demand for white wines from lesser-known appellations, partly due to the astronomical prices achieved by the Côte d'Or, has created interest and investment in lesser-known and famous appellations such as Pouilly-Fuissé, Saint-Veran and Macon Village. Michel Chapoutier, who was the first to apply parcel selection in Hermitage, wanted to be part of this new growing movement with the purchase of Trenel and immediately enhanced the best vineyards with the production of wines from single crus, such as the Saint-Veran Clos des Poncetys and En Terre Noir.
The vineyards of the Côte Chalonnaise are distributed over different types of soil: the reliefs of the region are characterized by gentle hills. It is about 35 kilometers long and 7 kilometers wide, with an average warmer climate than other areas of Burgundy. The ripening of the grapes, therefore, occurs early, even if the position of the vineyards, cultivated up to around 450 meters above sea level, mitigates the high temperatures somewhat.
The great Beaujolais Crus are finally being rediscovered, such as Julienas and Morgon Cote du Py. The wine market is rediscovering the greatness of Gamay, capable of creating wines with character and long aging. Beaujolais is not Nouveau, it is much more!
