Decugnano dei Barbi

A winery that was founded in the late 1970s and immediately decided to focus decisively on the quality of its production. Whites, but also reds and sparkling wines, types then decidedly unusual for the area. It is thanks to them, for example, that today the Orvieto area is famous for the precious sweet wines obtained in the area: in the early 1980s, in fact, the first Italian bottle obtained from grapes attacked by what is commonly known as "noble rot" was proposed, in the manner of the famous wines of Sauternes, near Bordeaux.
The estate is located right in front of the famous fortress of Orvieto, in the heart of the ancient production area of Orvieto Classico. The location is unique, the view it enjoys is wonderful, the exposure of the vineyards ideal. An estate, Decugnano dei Barbi, whose sole aim has always been the most total quality of its wines. The rows, which cover a total vineyard area of about thirty-two hectares, are planted on soils characterized by yellow sands, clays and fossils.
The varieties of vines are those of grechetto, procanico, vermentino, verdello, chardonnay, sauvignon blanc and semillon as far as white grapes are concerned, and sangiovese, montepulciano, syrah, cabernet sauvignon, merlot and pinot noir if red grapes are considered instead. In each case, guyot-trained and planted at a density of about 4,500 vines per hectare, the vines punctually yield fine, forthright, concentrated and rich clusters. Without using insecticides and chemical herbicides, treatments are kept to a minimum and agronomic management respects the balance of environment, nature and ecosystem to the maximum.
Labels, those of the "Decugnano dei Barbi" winery, able to excite and tell the best oenological essence of the green heart of Italy.
