Domaine Grand Roche
Domaine Grand Roche is a twenty-three hectare family business founded in 1987 by Erik Lavalée. The Domaine produces exclusively grapes grown in sustainable agriculture and coming from its own vineyards in the Saint Bris, Chablis and Côtes d'Auxerre appellation.
The Côtes d'Auxerre is a region of Burgundy that develops south of the city of Auxerre, around the banks of the Yonne river. The first vineyards appeared in the 14th century and in 1321 Auxerre wines were served at the coronation of Charles VI. In 1787 the region boasted 1827 hectares of vineyards but after the phylloxera only 200 were replanted.
Today little known, the Côtes d'Auxerre produces white wines from Chardonnay grapes and reds from Pinot Noir with an excellent quality/price ratio. The vineyards are located between 120 and 280 meters above sea level, mainly exposed to the south-east and south-west.
Among the Domaine's production there is also Saint Bris, a semi-unknown appellation that develops around the village of Saint-Bris-Le-Vineux. The AOC dates back to 2003 and is the only Burgundy appellation that involves the use of Sauvignon (both Blanc and Gris) rather than the classic Chardonnay.
The Sauvignons of Saint Bris have the classic aromatic character of Sauvignon Blanc but are lighter and less concentrated than those of the Loire.
