Roman Woman

The Omina Romana winery was founded in 2007 in Velletri, a short distance from Lake Nemi, by the German Börner family. It is nestled among the lush, volcanic hills of the Castelli Romani, which overlook the Tyrrhenian Sea, about 40 kilometers south of Rome.
The company’s mission is to create a new winery whose products embody the values of the highest quality, as the result of expertise and science, passion and rigor; the family has a deep passion not only for viticulture but also for ancient history. In fact, the sites housing the winery and vineyards are rich in historical, monumental, and mythological references. The Etruscans were the first to cultivate vines and produce wine in this region, followed by the Romans: “Ômina” is in fact the plural of the Latin word “omen” and means “good omens,” those that the ancient Romans sought in the stars or in the signs of nature before embarking on any undertaking.
The climate of this area is Mediterranean, tempered by the sea breeze and winds from the Alban Hills, which promote significant temperature fluctuations at night—essential for imparting the wines’ aromatic finesse. The soils are predominantly clayey and sandy, of volcanic origin, with varying exposures and altitudes ranging around 250 meters above sea level.
