This is the company's flagship bottling, produced from 1971 to 1981 as Chianti Classico Montevertine and, since 1982, following its withdrawal from the Chianti Classico Consortium, simply as Montevertine. Made from select Sangiovese, Canaiolo, and Colorino grapes, it matures for two years in Slavonian oak barrels. Colorino provides color and floral notes; Canaiolo, on the other hand, reveals the fruit and helps support the tannins and freshness of the Sangiovese. The grapes come from a 2.5-hectare vineyard, defined by rows with southeast and south exposure. Harvesting is done manually.
A dull red in color, yet very lively and luminous, it offers notes of red fruits, dark spices, and fresh notes such as licorice. On the palate, it is a wine with a complex texture, full and enveloping, structured by present and pronounced tannins. It concludes with a herbaceous finish reminiscent of the undergrowth, from fern to moss, with good persistence.
