Albahra, which means “Little Sea,” is a wine-growing region located in the Almansa area, near the city of Albacete, in the southeasternmost part of Castile and León.
The soils in this wine-growing area are primarily chalky (calcareous) with patches of clay and sand.
Albahra is a red wine made from 70% Garnacha Tintorera grapes (also known as Alicante Bouschet) and 30% Moravia Agria grapes grown on sandier soil in the nearby Manchuela region. The Moravia Agria grape is characterized by high acidity and low alcohol content.
This wine is fermented in large 80-hectoliter concrete tanks, where the skins and some of the stems are left in.
The Garnacha Tintorera is aged in concrete, while the Moravia Agria is aged in small, neutral oak barrels.
Envinate Albahra is a delicious red wine with a strong Mediterranean influence and a perfect balance of fresh red fruits, such as blackcurrant, and smoky, spicy notes of black pepper and nutmeg. On the palate, the wine reveals excellent acidity and great drinkability, with subtle, well-integrated tannins and good fruit concentration. It’s the perfect wine for lamb, but it’s also excellent with a mushroom risotto or a chicken fricassee.
