Don Diego Grillo, “El Mulato,” a famous Cuban pirate born in Havana in 1555.

At a very young age, he signed on as a ship's boy, and when the English privateer Francis Drake captured his ship, he entered Drake's service.

Brave, skilled, and ruthless, he took part in many attacks on Spanish ships and cities in the Americas and had a meteoric rise, eventually rising to command a ship—despite being a mulatto.

After 1619, all traces of him are lost, and we know nothing more about him.
