Even outside the rum drinking community, Barbados' Foursquare Distillery is no longer newsworthy. Each year they release three ever phenomenal releases in their Exceptional Cask Selection series, and practically everyone agrees in unison that they are extraordinary and that it is getting harder and harder to grab a piece!
The latter version is referred to as "Sovereignty" as a patriotic tribute to Barbados which officially severed ties with the British crown, removing Elizabeth II as a symbolic head of state and becoming a republic in November 2021). The rum itself is a blend of two distinct single blended rums, both 14 years of age. One aged 14 years, entirely in Ex-Bourbon Barrels, and a second double matured, aged 3 years in Ex-Bourbon, then another 11 years in Ex-Sherry Casks.
The Sovereignty displays significant depth with flawless balance; citrusy and fruity despite having complex oxidative and nutty characteristics. Aromas of grapefruit peel, with dark fruits, cherries and black berries, followed by dark chocolate, cashews, caramelized pineapple and pipe tobacco. On the palate it is bold and complex, carrying on notes of citrus and fruit, pomegranate, toasted almond and hazelnut. There are hints of toasted baked spices, especially cinnamon and cloves. Dry and slightly tannic finish with persistent notes of caramel, tobacco and overripe pineapple. Bottled without filtration at 62% vol without adding color, sugar or other additives.
